IMPORTANT--Beat the Tax
As you know, the HST comes
into effect July 1st of this year (Happy Canada
Day). What I didn't find out until just a couple
of days ago is that any "6 sessions of
acupuncture" packages purchased after May 1st
may be subjected to HST. That is, any of those
sessions that you use after July 1st will mean
that you owe an extra 7% to pay the balance of
the HST. Yes, it sucks. If you use your sessions
before July 1st, you don't have to worry. If you
purchased a package before May 1st, you don't
have to worry. But, if you were considering
buying a package of sessions that may be
partially used after July 1st and if would like
to avoid that extra tax, you have to make your
purchases before May 1. You can do so online at
http://www.activetcm.com/shop_services.shtml
or call us at
604-783-2846. Because of the accounting mess
this tax confusion may create, I may not offer
packages between May 1 and July 1 of this year,
unless we are sure all of your treatments will
be completed before July 1, 2010.
April 22nd was Earth Day.
Did you recognize that day with anything
special? I wrote about my commitments for this
year on my blog at

Many of you know that I've been working
hard with two colleague MDs to forward the
integrative medicine movement. Well, we're
excited to announce that as a celebration of its
10 year anniversary (Dr. Ashley Riskin
started it when he was a medical student), AIMS
has just expanded beyond UBC and is now a
registered non-profit in BC! Even better, we're
also announcing the release of an all new and
updated website for AIMS (Alternative &
Integrative Medical Society). From information
on various natural health practices, to a
wellness directory, to up-to-date research
article links, to event calendars, you will find
it all here. Go to
http://www.aims.ubc.ca/
to check it out and to sign up for AIMS News and
Research Updates.
If you know of a senior
living in Ladner who could use some help for
basic things like getting groceries, doing
laundry, and other daily tasks, Rhonda Doram of
HoneyDo is your gal. Check out the interview of

A Hole in the Sidewalk
Here's a poem that I love...
Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
By Portia Nelson
1) I walk down the street There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost . . . . I am hopeless. It isn’t my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.
2) I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again. I can’t believe I’m in the same place. But it isn’t my fault. It still takes a long time to get out.
3) I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in. . . . it's a habit. My eyes are open I know where I am It is my fault. I get out immediately.
4) I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.
5) I walk down another street.
Canada Health Day is May 12th. This day was
chosen as it's the birthday of Florence
Nightingale. Florence served as a military
nurse in the 1800s and is recognized for her
life-long commitment and self-sacrifices to
improve the health and welfare of all. My
mom trained as a nurse at one of the schools
named in Florence Nightingale's honour, so I
know her name well. If you'd like to read
more about here, click

Let's get ready to celebrate Canada Health
Day by starting with making some changes in
what we do for our own health and wellness!
I chose the poem above because many of us
continue to "walk down the same street" and
"fall into that same hole" when it comes to
making choices about our health. For some
it's making the wrong food choices, such as
skipping meals, caving in too often to
unhealthy cravings, and not eating enough
veggies. For others it's continuing to allow
stress to build without a plan on how to
regularly manage it using something like
meditation, exercise, practiced breathing
routines, creative hobbies, or
ahhhhcupuncture. Or perhaps your challenge
is getting enough sleep, either because you
can't or you simply don't.
We all make choices every day. If your
choices are landing you in a hole, choose a
different street. Need help on how to do
that? Just ask: drcarr@activetcm.com.
Stick it to Your Pain!
Summer is approaching and for many that
means more activity. Whether that activity
is playing tennis, going golfing, hiking,
swimming, travelling, walking, running,
gardening, or renovating your home, you know
that pain can and will slow you down. If you
have pain, acupuncture holds an answer for
you.
Here are some links to articles on some of
the most common types of pain I see:
