Welcome back to Active Life Health Clinic's July newsletter.

We're already halfway through the summer and I hope that you've had some time to get out and enjoy it. Since summer's warm weather can bring with it foot issues for some, this month's newsletter is foot-focused.

Think about what you wear on your feet and read on. Do you love your shoes more than your feet? If you believe that you can be nicer to your feet, and to your body, find out what new service we have to offer...

What other services would you like us to offer? I value your opinions and would love your views and thoughts on my possible venture into an integrative health clinic. Please read on below and send in your answers to my brief survey.

As a thank you, one person will be randomly selected for a small health package prize.

You can also win a free reflexology session by identifying the animal at the bottom of this email (a hint: it fits with the theme of this newsletter).

Helping you help yourself!

My goal:
To work in partnership with you to bring you to your optimal health.

My focus:
Ongoing health, not just temporary relief.

This is active health.

Form vs. Function

It's said that you can read a lot about a person by looking at his or her shoes. Is he a practical person? Is she trend-focused? Does he pay attention to his appearance? As a shoe-lover, I'm all for the look and style. However, as a health practitioner, I also push for something that will work for the feet and body, and not just the eyes.

With the warmer weather of summer, many of us have switched to sandals, flip flops, and slip on shoes. We also get out and walk more. We go hiking and biking. We play more outdoor sports. We push our foot pain limits in high heels when we attend weddings and other fancy events.

Are we choosing the wrong shoes? Think about this, do your feet hurt at the end of your day? Remembering that alignment starts at your feet, do your ankles, knees, hips, back hurt ? Do you have blisters, bunions, or calluses?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate your hard-working tootsies and take care of your feet. Read this article on flip flops and their downsides: click here.

While I despise the look of Crocs (remembering I still love shoe style), I agree with everything else in this article. Another article on footwear is this blog with images of foot binding of ancient China (well, not entirely ancient as it was still common until 1949 when it became illegal) and modern crazy Japanese shoes (that I'm sure are not actually popular). Click here to see these images.

And I'd like to add that if you have foot issues or pain in your body, it's time to make a change. Try acupuncture or our new service...

A New Service!

If you thought that "Happy Feet" was just a movie about a tap dancing penguin, then think again. Happy feet are also the result of a wonderful session with Active Life Health Clinic's new registered reflexologist Helene Decarie. You will feel relaxed, but there's so much more to it than that. Try a reflexology session on your feet, hands, and ears for the health benefits that will have you dancing! Treatments are offered in clinic and at your workplace. Ask us for more information and read on for more about Helene and reflexology.

About Helene

Helene Decarie has been a registered certified reflexologist since 2003. A graduate of the International Academy of Natural Health Science in Ottawa, Helene believes that reflexology is a map of what your feet and hands reveal about your health. As a reflexologist, Helene has the ability to tune into the body's rhythm, while balancing the mind, body and soul. Each treatment is personalized with specific recommendations. Reflexology is a tool to ease the imbalances within and restore the body to optimum health.

Experience the bliss of relaxation and feel rejuvenated as Helene treats your feet!

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflex areas on the body that correspond to every part, organ and gland within the system. Massage techniques are used on the feet, hands and ears to stimulate these reflexes. Reflexology is effective in treating a variety of imbalances by helping to unblock congestion, stimulate circulation and improve elimination. It can also relieve stress and tension in all areas of the body.

Want to know how reflexology can help? Here are some examples:

An Eye Exam on the Feet

A weekly client came to see me for general health.  Through the treatments I sensed some fatigue and exhaustion [how do you sense fatigue and exhaustion? Did you feel tightness, weakness, bumps? Other?] that we were unable to disperse in the area of the eye reflexes. I recommended that she see an eye doctor to investigate this finding. As it turned out, my client needed reading glasses. After a few weeks of wearing the glasses the tension in the eye reflex area and all involved symptoms [was she getting eye strain? Headaches? Other?] subsided.

Relief of Symptoms

A barista who suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome came to me for some relief from her pain. After a few treatments the pain was significantly diminished and I taught her how to treat herself by applying pressure to a point on her feet. As a result of my recommendations  the barista continues to work pain free.

For the month of August, Helene will be offering a discount of one treatment at a 50% discount for you when you refer a friend who books an appointment. You can take the half price deal all for yourself or split the cost with your friend. Up to you.

A Survey

Want to win a prize? How about helping me figure out what you want? Please fill out the attached survey and you'll be entered into our draw (please note that if you filled out a form in clinic, you too will be entered). For the survey, click here.

Speaking of feet...
What kind of bird is this?

I took a picture of this cute fellow on one of the Galapagos Islands.

First person to answer correctly will receive one free reflexology session with Helene.
